Aeration
Lawn aeration performed in spring or fall helps control lawn thatch. The process of lawn aeration can be as simple as poking holes in the soil here and there, but this would work only for superficial cases. Core aeration is a type of lawn aeration whereby a machine with hollow tines mechanically removes plugs or “cores” of soil and thatch from a lawn. Core aeration reduces soil compaction, creating a channel through which oxygen, water, and nutrients can penetrate the soil. You should also faithfully remove as much lawn thatch as you can in fall by raking deeply, rather than just skimming the autumn leaves off the top of the lawn.
Dethatching
Lawn thatch is the layer of mainly dead turfgrass tissue lying between the green vegetation of the grass above and the root system and soil below. This layer, if it becomes much thicker than 1/2 inch, can be bad for your grass and must be removed to maintain lawn health. Generally, a layer of thatch begins to be a problem when it becomes 1 inch thick. The process of removing (dead grass) from a lawn, is usually to aerate the soil.
